The article presents the historical development process, analysis and forecast of the Russian retail market for the short term. The largest mergers and acquisitions deals for 2018 and 2019 are analyzed, a review of the activities of the largest market companies is carried out, key trends and restrictions on the development of this market are considered. The authors also analyze the Russian Internet trading market. The theoretical basis of the study was the work of foreign and domestic scientists on the study of the competitiveness of retail companies. As research methods, the method of synthesis, analysis, generalization and grouping of scientific data was used. The study showed that the main changes in the traditional retail sector are associated with the expansion of the geography of networks. In addition, there has been an increase in online trading, the development of new payment methods, the share of sales of retail stores in discounter format is growing.
